Vintage Christmas...

*****

I'm not sure why I love vintage pictures & postcards at Christmas... Maybe because it reminds me of simpler times.

Remember when most stores weren't even open on Sunday? And if you didn't get everything you needed for your holiday dinner you sure weren't going to find a store open Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas! Remember when you had to share a phone line with your neighbors? (party line) Or how we just had a few channels on TV and how all the stations went off the air each night. Parents,TV's or computers didn't entertain kids, they went outside to play. Neighbor kids would knock on the door and ask if Ron or Robin could come out and play-There was no such thing as a play date.

I miss those days of going out on the land with dad and cutting down the "Charlie Brown" Christmas tree that our horse pulled home for us. Then stringing popcorn to hang on it while watching The Lawrence Welk special with mom ("A One Ahh, A two Ahh, A three Ahh, lets polka!") Funny thing is, I'm not that old but times sure are different... I think about my Grandma who is 93 - What a shock is must be to see the world change the way it has right in front of her eyes.

So at this moment I'm thinking/dreaming vintage while I am sitting in bed, typing on my WiFi laptop, watching a flat screen TV that has 900 something channels that I can pause, rewind or fast forward through the commercials. At the same time I'm burning Christmas CD's then flipping them over and engraving them a second later with my lightscribe. Yes, times HAVE changed.

Would you rather live life like it was in the old days or do you prefer things as they are now? If you could live during any era which would you choose?

  1. I would choose in between---times and technology are moving way too fast, wish my kids were comfortable walking (anywhere)....wish we didn't have so many T.V channels....really wish people said what they meant and meant what they say....sure wish a handshake still had meaning..

  3. I definitely do not want the sickness, the one week trips to the beauty shop and I sure like typing on a computer rather than a type writer - but I was thinking the other morning, I missed the sound of the milk man dropping 2 or 3 fresh bottles of milk into the milk box, less traffic sounds outside, and the deliciousness of Christmas desserts because they were so rare.

I am so blessed today - I would never want to go back - however, I think it would have been so neat to have lived during an earlier period - but I think I would be disappointed! What if I chose Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol period, and I was an orphan - no I don't think I would like that -

Merry Christmas! I do so love vintage Christmas! As long as I don't over-analyze

  4. Oh Robin, I am just stuck between worlds! I want some of the days MUCH earlier than those, yet I want some of that time when stores weren't open on Sunday and some of now! If I could pick out the best in each era, that would do it for me.

Thanks so much for stopping by and your kind words. I so appreciate it!! Have a wonderful week and give that sweet and adorable Noelle a big hug and say it is from me!

  5. What a great post, Robin...you brought back a lot of memories for me. I think I would like to live life the way things used to be in the 70's and early 80's. No cell phones or fancy video game systems to take up our time. We didn't know how good we had it back then, did we?

  6. I am going with a mixture of then and now. I remember staying out playing with all the kids on the street till the street lights came on. No cell phones to know each and every movement everyone makes. I would love a bit of a simpler time. I LOVE your vintage cards, makes me feel warm and cozy inside.♥

  7. I always felt like I belonged in the 50's..lol..not sure why!

I loveeeeeeee cutting down our Christmas tree every year (and yes..last years DID fall down but this was after everything was on it..this year I waited a couple hours and it did fall but had nothing on it..and I think we have fixed our problem, so next year we should be good..lol)!

  8. Amen! Christmas and the world have been commercialized and digitized. My kids were spending way too much time at the TV or the computer (so was I), so we decided to only have special TV days on Friday and Saturday, so they can go out and play, or read during the week instead.
Yesterday, all 3 of my kids sat down and played a game together, and for the first time in months, there was no fighting all night. It was beautiful.

  9. I'm thinking mid 60's to mid 70's. I had the BEST childhood growing up just as you mentioned above and I never felt like we didn't have enough. What a wonderful post!

  10. Both. Technology is a great and wonderful thing, but it can be a huge distraction from the things that really matter!

  11. Hi Robin
I loved the vintage images. The last one looks like it's somewhere nearby!
I enjoyed hearing your memories of simpler times. One thing that sticks in my mind from my childhood is the advent calender. We had the same one every year, we just closed the doors and stored it away until the next year. It always seemed really special to get it out every year. Nowadays the chocolate filled ones don't seem the same if you know what I mean.
I would choose a mixture of both eras if I could. I wouldn't have met you if it wasn't for modern technology so if I HAD to choose I would choose modern times.

  12. What a great thought provoking post! I love living in technology, but I have always had a real thing for the WWII era. Just the way men were chivalrous, and women were feminine, and they wore red lipstick and dresses, and men wore hats and took them off for a passing lady... ahhh... and Cary Grant, and James Stewart, and the Andrews Sisters, and old movies... I could live in that generation for a little while... but not forever... I'd miss my blog too much! LOL (and the Cullens)

Oh... and thanks for the reminder about the guitar lessons. We nearly missed those! LOL

  13. Good manners and common sense never get old or go out of style...just wish more people remembered that!

I, like some of your other commenters, like a mix of both. I'm an old-fashioned Southern girl at heart but I love my DVR and wi-fi, Shug!

  14. I really do enjoy my computer, but I sure do miss those simpler times. I think I would gladly give up a lot of this stuff, and go back twenty or thirty years.

  15. I do want to go back in time, where things wer definitely simplier. The comp/TV is taking too much of our time away from family and everything else. I want those times, when there were lesser cars on the roads and we could run everywhere.
